This is a big step in learning how to build your own website
How to build a WordPress theme is one thing that a lot of people I know want to do. They know a bit of HTML and CSS, but don’t know where to begin to develop WordPress websites. They know WordPress is awesome, but if you can’t get a decent design they aren’t interested. (The truth is that there are great WordPress designs everywhere. They are just too picky.)
This video is one part HTML web design and two parts customizing WordPress. I’m going to assume you’ve seen my tutorials for WordPress and already know how it works. There are a couple of images you’ll need to get from my GitHub account. Also, I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and Sublime Text 2 for a text editor. Also, you’ll need a WordPress installation somewhere other than WordPress.com It can be local via XAMPP, MAMP, or Linux.
Once all of this is completed, you are ready to create a WordPress theme. This is the ultimate goal to customize WordPress. Honestly, it’s a lot easier to develop a WordPress theme than you can imagine. I recorded this video live in less than three hours. the total run time is less than two hours. You might have to slow down to see what I am doing, but this is half a days exercise. The theme isn’t complete. It’s still a little ugly, but it’s functional. You can finish the CSS.
The video is two hours long, and I leave it unfinished, but all it really needs is a little CSS. It’s a simple simple little theme for WordPress with a header, footer, and a left sidebar for widgets. I hope you enjoy it. You should also go ahead and open the WordPress codex and the template hierarchy since I reference them so much.
