Hash rules are rules created in group policy that analyze software. It considers the “footprint” of software to recognize it. This means that if the program is renamed, it will still be recognized. Renaming the software is an old trick used by people who write viruses. these hash rules in Group Policy can be used to either allow or disallow a program to run. The problem is that if the software is updated or the users simply download an old version, the software can run. This hash rule and many like it can stop a virus or trojan from running rampant in your network. This is available in local or domain group policy, although this video is made using the local GPO. It affects all users of that computer. This video was made on Windows 7, but is possible on XP, Vista, 2000, Windows Server 2003 and 2008.

Ninite is a website that allows the installation of several programs with one installer. It will automatically remove any adware that typically comes with these installers. They have an extremely extensive list of software that they can install and are always open to suggestions. Ninite is free for the home user, but expects payment to be used in an business environment. (And for good reason!) The list is far too numerous to list here. Please visit http://www.ninite.com to view them all. I make this video on Windows 7, but it works just as well on Windows Vista, or XP. Ninite only supports Microsoft Windows operating systems.

This howto video shows that Windows Easy Transfer is a program introduced with Microsoft Windows Vista. It was used to transfer files and settings from Windows XP to Windows Vista. the transfer methods include transfer via removable drive, network drive, or a USB cable. Windows Easy Transfer WILL NOT transfer programs. It will also not transfer items specific to the old operating system. Also a good number of programs that came with Vista do not come with Windows 7 by default. It is a relatively painless process that takes less than hour to perform. It even allows you to set a password to prevent people from stealing your settings. This is important because it may be transferring sensitive documents, emails, or other files. Windows Easy transfer is a free download and will transfer from Windows XP, Vista, or 7 to Windows Vista or 7. You may only transfer from older operating systems to newer operating systems and will likely fail from 32 bit (x86) operating systems to 64 bit (x64) operating systems.
